Players' problems with the law

Postby claude on Sat Jun 14, 2008 7:27 am

I started thinking back to earlier years and which Bills made off-field
negative headlines. Because I did not live in Buffalo for many of these
years, because I was overseas for some of them, and because I didnt have
access to the internet before the late '90's, I may have missed some of the
negative news. I could only recall the following, and I'm not even sure of
the details of those.

Bruce Smith, early in his career, for drug use.
I think Cornelius Bennett for spousal abuse or something like that.
If I'm not mistaken, Andre Reed got into some kind of scrape with the law.

These are the only *prominent* players I can recall having this sort of
legal problem.

Granted, there was lots of partying, but not much that I can recall which
precipitated serious police involvement.

In the last year, there have been 4 prominent Bills who have had problems
with the law. I'm concerned that this might be a disturbing trend in the
kinds of players they are willing to sign on.

There was a lot more stuff. Kelly had several run-ins with the law. OJ
would routinely smack-around his first wife, but since he was a local hero,
it would go unreported. None of this stuff is new, it's just more known
because of the internet.

I hadnt heard any of that stuff about Kelly. OJ is no surprise, but I don't
think any of that was publicized. Despite the fact that the internet was
not so active over these year, I don't think it would have slipped by the
newspapers. But then again, those of us out of town wouldnt have heard
about it.
