Bills sign QB Matt Baker

Postby Bender on Thu May 01, 2008 3:37 pm

The Buffalo Bills have added a quarterback to the roster as the club
claimed Matt Baker off waivers. Baker had been with the Dolphins up
until early this week.

The 6'2" 212-pound signal caller was signed out of college in 2006 as an
undrafted free agent by the Houston Texans. In the middle of his first
training camp he was released by Houston and signed by the Dallas
Cowboys. He then served on the Cowboys practice squad as a rookie.
Last season Baker spent time on both the Cardinals and Saints practice
squads.

Baker played his college ball at North Carolina where as a senior in
2005 he was named the team's most valuable offensive player. In his only
season as a starter he threw for 2,345 yards, the fourth most in school
history with nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also served as
team captain.

Well well well, this sets the stage for a Losman trade.

Why does everybody assume this? Because they signed another QB? Last year,
the Bills went into the regular season with only two QB's. By the time the
season ended, they had three. I would not assume JP is gone. Isn't it
possible the target is Hamdan?

Maybe because he's in the final year of his contract, has indicated he
does not want to be in Buffalo, will command a high salary, and after
the year when the contract is up they get nothing in return. Other
then that, yeah, you're right.

Exactly. I think they are looking for Edwards back up next year, this year,
and that person would become the 3rd QB this year.

That way, when JP leaves after this year, *theoretically* the Bills would
move this years 3rd stringer into the second string spot next year.

Another good post.
Why is this concept so hard to grasp for some people? Why would a team give
anything up to acquire a player that has one year remaining on his
contract? The player could just as easily walk out on them after his
contract was up.

The problem would be if Edwards gets injured in 2008 and Losman leads
the Bills to the Super Bowl ;-)

Pffft...no way they trade Losman now and leave Edwards with this chump Baker
as his back up...that would be completely moronic.

And knowing all this, who in their right mind would give up jack * for
Losman? The most the Bills would ever get for him is a few practice jerseys
and a sack of used jocks. He's worth more to the Bills on the sideline. And
he'll improve his own standing around the league if he plays the good
trooper.

What's so hard to grasp? They keep him they get nothing in return.
They trade him at least they get something. It's clear he will not be
back next year. Get something while you can.
